Tackling red lips

It can take awhile to get comfortable settling into a new trend. Just like with heels that I haven’t worn in awhile that I practice walking around in before I go out, I get used to new styles by wearing them around my apartment. It seems like a silly trick since no one is around to see you, but once I get comfortable seeing myself in the mirror, I feel comfortable taking my look outside. Adoration and compliments from others is nice, but the true power in an outfit comes from the confidence you exude while you’re wearing it. Case in point: I get plenty of people telling me I’d look great in bright pinks, oranges, and yellows, but I don’t feel like “me” when I’m wearing them, and that discomfort would likely be reflected in my posture and body language, which we humans are very good at picking up on.

Ignore my embarrassingly haggard nail polish. I redid them later in the evening, so have no fear!

Recently I’ve been trying to nudge myself in the direction of red lips. The look is classic and it pops against your skin whether you’re white, black, Asian, or any shade in between. To me a woman with red lipstick is strong, knows what she wants, isn’t afraid to go after it, and is comfortable with herself. Hopefully by the end of the year, after several afternoons of cooking with rouged up lips, I’ll be ready to hit the town with pow and know how to eat without getting it on my teeth.

Do you have any makeup or clothing trends you want to try out but are still feeling a little sheepish about?

  1. Hi love!
You look totally gorgeous with red lipstick on! I’m just like you in the sense that I have to be comfortable in what I’m wearing in my own home before I can showcase it to the world… or else everyone will be able to see through me! This is a great post and I really like your blog. I’d love for you to check mine out if you get a minute xx

  2. Jocellyn I love this!! Maybelline color last is a great one to have to avoid getting it on your teeth and they have some phenomenal shades of red 🙂

  3. I think you re dead on. If you are not comfortable with what you wear it just shows. And totally affects they way others see you. Coincidentally, red lips is the one thing I do not dare to wear just because I have not found the right shade. You may have encouraged me to try though.
